September 10th, 2014

Running on to finish a credible fifth in the Listed Heatherlie Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield on August 30th, trainer Ciaron Maher has revealed he may accept a position in the final field of this weekend’s Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) for talented stayer Mr O’Ceirin.

Securing a commendable total of ten wins and six places from 35 competitive starts so-far, Mr O’Ceirin performed well in notable black type events through the 2014 Winter Racing Carnival in Queensland, returning to the paddock for just a few weeks before beginning his spring preparation.

Confident the Postponed gelding is still harbouring sufficient fitness from his winter campaign, Maher told Racing Victoria continued rain over the Rosehill Gardens track leading into the weekend will likely warrant a trip north to contest the Kingston Town Stakes for Mr O’Ceirin.

“Whether Mr O’Ceirin runs is weather dependent,” Maher said.

“He’s got really good form on rain -affected tracks.

“He’s fit and well, he’s come off his first up run pretty well and he’s normally pretty good second-up over that trip, so that’s an option for him. We’re just weighing it up.

“Obviously he’s retained a lot of fitness form his winter prep, he only had a light let up and he’s pulled up quite well.

“Back out to the 2000 and back into handicap conditions, it should be a nice race for him.”

A notable performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Mr O’Ceirin won the Printhouse Graphics Handicap (2040m) on June 15th and continued to build in form and class on his way to winning the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m), claiming second in the Listed Slickpix Stakes (1700m) and winning the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) most notably.

Returning to racing for a forgettable 11th in the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) on April 19th, the gelding out of Cadell finished second behind champion mare Streama in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) on May 3rd; placing a credible seventh in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) before again finishing a close second in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) most notably on June 7th.
