Herculian Prince Improves Melbourne Cup Chances with 2010 Kingston Town Stakes Win

September 13th, 2010

Esteemed Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse has strengthened her chances of having a runner in the 2010 Melbourne Cup field after her improving stayer Herculian Prince won the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes (2000m) in breathtaking style at Rosehill on Saturday.

Five-year-old Yamanin Vital gelding Herculian Prince was the hot $1.90 favourite in the 2010 Kingston Town Stakes and lived up to the hype with a brilliant front-running performance to win three-quarters of a length ahead of Stormhill ($41) with The Embassy ($8.50) over two lengths away in third.

Herculian Prince is entered for both the 2010 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups this spring, Saturday’s win improving his ability to make the final fields for the features.

A natural stayer, Herculian Prince had no troubles stepping up to the 2000m of the Kingston Town Stakes after his last start third in the Tramway Handicap over a much shorter 1400m.

The galloper has now won eight of his 14 career starts earning $294,386 in prizemoney, his Kingston Town victory giving Waterhouse her fifth win in the event named after the turf star trained by her late father Tommy Smith.

Following his classy win on Saturday, Sportsbet have shortened Herculian Prince into the $13 equal second favourite in the Caulfield Cup betting trailing Moudre ($10).

In the 2010 Melbourne Cup odds Herculian Prince is currently paying $26 through Sportsbet.

The other feature Rosehill races held on Saturday were the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1400m) where Herculian Prince’s famous stablemate More Joyous claimed victory, and the Group 3 Research Stakes (1200m) won by the Peter Snowden-trained Trim.
